#I really want to take a second to praise David for his acting here #because all you need to do is look at his face and you can see that everything is absolutely horribly wrong #and the most terrible part is how subtle it is #he doesn’t look outright panicked or distraught #he looks passive #and that’s the worst expression the doctor can have #because at least when there’s fear or desperation you know he doesn’t want to give up #you know he’s going to fight and he’s going to keep trying #but this is resignation #pure resignation #he realizes exactly what’s happened and what has to happen and how much it is going to tear him apart #and that face says there is no other option #all he can do is let it happen #it burns him alive but he can’t show it #he knows he can’t because it’s going to be hard enough for her #and he needs to be strong here #he needs to shut down and be as cold and detached as he can get #because it’s better than letting the pain in #it’s better than showing her exactly how much this is going to kill him #because that will only make it worse #that face says more in its subtleties than it ever could in outright expression #bravo David #truly

As much as I loved the feelsy River/Doctor moment there when he admitted to seeing her and such, I feel when she asked if he could say ‘goodbye’ like he would come back, he should have just said with a grin “Geronimo” and leaned back into that scarred timeline.

Doctor Thoughts (DW SPOILERS)

My brother brought this up to me. What if John Hurt was The Doctor’s very first self. A self before he became the Doctor. I shall call him John Hurt for now. (Now, these are ideas coming from someone who has never seen any of the episodes before the new Series starting with the 9th Doctor)

John Hurt, born Time Lord, his very first body, on Gallifrey. Didn’t start calling himself The Doctor until his second body- Thus becoming, technically, the first ’Doctor’.

But why the Doctor?

He would have had to have done something major. Like the 11th said in ‘The Name of the Doctor’ in response to John Hurt.

John Hurt: “What I did, I did without choice.”
11th Doctor:“I know.”
John Hurt: “In the name of peace, and sanity.”
11th Doctor: “But not in the name of The Doctor.”

‘Not in the name of The Doctor’. Meaning the 11th already knew what happened. He would never risk looking into his future, he knows better. The destruction he could cause.

John Hurt could have been a warrior on Gallifrey; a soldier. As a soldier you do horrible things without question- without fail.
He could have done many horrible things. The Great Intelligence said he was blood soaked. He could have done a great (yet terrible) many things as a soldier.
Maybe he went above and beyond?

‘In the name of peace and sanity.’ Could he have possibly been the one to bring the Daleks to the Time Lord’s attention? Or something even greater. Started wars upon wars and committed genocies for the sake of Time Lords and their peace, knowing what would come? All to protect the Time Lords and Gallifrey?
Maybe instead, he went on his own timeline constantly, or was constantly going back in time and re-writing the wrongs on Gallifrey.

Then, John Hurt gets killed and regenerates. Someone had either smacked sense into him or he had an epiphany of sorts, realized how wrong he was and decided to redeem himself. Mend the things he had broken. Make right the things he had wronged.

So he steals a TARDIS and goes on a journey to do just that. Under a new name. ‘The Doctor’. A healer. A person who helps and makes things better.

So for centuries into a millennia he has worked on making things right- seeking redemption.

John Hurt is his biggest secret.

The secret?

Who he was before he was The Doctor.

11th Doctor: “The name you choose is like, like a promise. He’s the one who broke the promise.”

Okay, so maybe, John Hurt occurred during the Time War. Maybe he was the one who ultimately decided on putting Gallifrey into the Time Lock and committing genocide not only on his own people, but Daleks as well. (Genocide being used loosely, for effect.)

Because think about it, The Doctor wouldn’t do that- yes, he’s The Oncoming Storm, but billions upon billions of not one race, but two? So maybe there was a regeneration between 8 and 9, John Hurt. But because of what he did, The Doctor never considered him a ‘Doctor’.

And think back to ‘The God Complex’. The hotel where your room contains your biggest fear.
When the Doctor looked into his, he said “Who else?”, with the TARDIS’ alert bell clogging along in the background.

Maybe he saw John Hurt.

For those of you possibly asking, “Well why in The Eleventh Hour didn’t his face pop up?” Because the Doctor asked “Is this world protected?”

John Hurt never protected earth. Only the Doctor did. And the Doctor would never consider John Hurt a ‘Doctor’.

Let me tell you a story.

I was playing Left 4 Dead 2 the other night with a friend of mine. Our two NPCs were dead, he had just died and armed with an axe, I was surrounded by zombies and farther than I would have liked from the boat.

I was chopping like mad and my screen was covered in blood when I hear;

”Joanna, you’re Canadian, just channel your inner lumberjack!”

I lost my shit and nearly died.
